A large British contingent from the Loughborough group are currently on a training camp in Gold Coast, Australia.
Yesterday evening, WTCS medallist Sophie Coldwell and her compatriot Sophia Green took part in the local Wednesday Worlds Criterium. Organised by the Gold Coast Cycling Club, the racing took place at the Luke Harrop circuit in Nerang.
The results are not yet available for Coldwell’s performance. The Brits, however, were not the only triathletes starting.
WTCS silver medallist Matthew Hauser finished second in the A category race. Hauser’s race consisted of a 65 minute course plus two laps to finish off. Beating Hauser to the win was Riley Fleming, a semi-professional cyclist who currently races for St George Continental Cycling Team.
Moreover, one week prior Hauser’s Australian team mate, Jaz Hedgeland, raced the same criterium. Racing in the B category, Hedgeland was the first woman over the line.
Her B category race consisted of 55 minutes plus two laps.
We recently saw a few of America’s top triathletes take on a gravel race in rather different conditions in Colorado. Whereas the Americans endured snow and cold, Nerang in Gold Coast has been hitting temperatures of 30 degrees (Celsius) with high attendant humidity.
Coldwell, Hauser and Hedgeland will all on be racing at WTCS Abu Dhabi in three weeks. Their hit out at the criterium will therefore no doubt be a welcome sharpener to their cycling fitness.
