Poll: Which team will win the most triathlon medals in Paris

By its nature, the Olympic Games is a contest between countries as much as it is between athletes. Whereas a single medal is reward for a lifetime of work for an athlete, it is often the overall medal table that garners most attention in some quarters. With that in mind, today you can take your pick as to which country will win the most medals across the three Olympic triathlon events this summer. At the last Olympic Games, Britain and America each came away with multiple medals. For the former,…

Poll Respondents Cast Doubt Over Olympic-WTCS Double

At the weekend, we asked if anyone believed that an athlete might complete the double of winning Olympic gold and WTCS gold in 2024. The double has proven an elusive feat, with only Flora Duffy and Kristian Blummenfelt having achieved it (both in 2021). Across the five previous Olympic cycles, none of the athletes that claimed Olympic gold won the corresponding world title. Even Duffy and Blummenfelt were aided to a degree insofar that the Tokyo Olympics counted towards the 2021 season’s WTCS. Looking ahead to 2024, the TriStats audience…

Will Anyone Complete The Olympics-WTCS Double In 2024?

Winning Olympic gold and the WTCS is a phenomenally difficult task. Only two athletes (Flora Duffy and Kristian Blummenfelt, both in 2021) have managed to complete the double, although each had idiosyncrasies in their achievements that should be noted. Looking ahead to 2024, the question to be asked is will anyone from the current batch of contenders achieve the double? Alex Yee has six WTCS wins in two years and an Olympic silver medal but as yet has not won a world title. Similarly, Hayden Wilde has four WTCS wins…

Women’s 2023 WTCS Podium Favoured Over Tokyo Podium

Last week, we asked which of the women’s 2021 Olympic podium and the women’s 2023 overall WTCS podium you think will fare better in 2024. A trio of world champions made up the 2021 podium: Flora Duffy (2016, 2017, 2021, 2022), Georgia Taylor-Brown (2020) and Katie Zaferes (2019). Meanwhile, the 2023 podium contained a first-time world champion in Beth Potter. Moreover, it contained two athletes that had made the overall Series podium for the first time: Cassandre Beaugrand and Emma Lombardi. Only 36% (rounded to the nearest integer) favoured the…

Podium Face-Off: The 2021 Women vs The 2023 Women

For a variety of reasons, the women’s WTCS podium contained none of the individual medallists from the Tokyo Olympics. Only two years have passed yet there has been a change at the top. In the defence of the Tokyo medallists, injuries to Flora Duffy and Georgia Taylor-Brown left them without a chance to claim a podium spot. Katie Zaferes’ maternity break has likewise seen her put a greater emphasis on 2024 rather than 2023. Nonetheless, Taylor-Brown’s win in Cagliari and Zaferes’ 5th place in Montreal hinted at what could be…

Taylor Knibb was also a popular choice. Yet she too will be absent. The full votes looked…
