World Triathlon have announced that two further races will be held in the 2023 WTCS.
After making its first appearance in the Series in 2022, Cagliari will host a WTCS race in 2023. Once again, it will be an Olympic distance race.
In addition, Montreal returns in 2023. This will be the sixth time Montreal has held at WTCS event and, as with 2022, it will play host to a Mixed Team Relay event too.
In contrast to 2021 and 2022, Montreal 2023 will be a Sprint race instead of the multi-round eliminator format.
Alex Yee and Georgia Taylor-Brown won the races in Montreal and Cagliari in 2022 so will likely be among the happiest about the announcement.
Following the addition of the two events, the Series will now contain six in-season events, plus the Paris Test Event, plus the Final.
Olympic distance continental championships may also count towards an athlete’s WTCS score. Altogether, that gives athletes ample opportunities to select their four scoring races before the Final.
In light of the additions, the new 2023 WTCS calendar looks as follows:
3-4 March – Abu Dhabi, UAE
13 May – Yokohama, JPN
27-28 May – Cagliari, ITA
24-25 June – Montreal, CAN
13-16 July – Hamburg, GER
29-30 July – Sunderland, GBR
22-24 September – Pontevedra, ESP (Final)
Note that the Paris Test Event will take place between 17-20 August.
Alongside the WTCS announcement, World Triathlon also disclosed that two scheduled World Cups in 2023 will not be taking place.
The stops in Busselton, Australia, and Bergen, Norway, are the ones that are out. Busselton will be a Continental Cup instead of a World Cup. Meanwhile Bergen will be pushed to 2024.
Bergen made its first appearance on the World Cup scene in 2022 to much fanfare. As the home of big names like Kristian Blummenfelt and Gustav Iden, World Triathlon will no doubt be keen to see the race return in 2024.
Even with the loss of Busselton and Bergen, there are still twelve World Cups scheduled for 2023. As a key event for athletes to score points towards Olympic qualification, it can be expected that each World Cup will be well attended.
World Triathlon also noted that more races might yet be added.
