A number of WTCS athletes turned up at the VII Triathlon Sprint Città di Lignano. Taking the win in the women’s race was World U23 bronze medallist Bianca Seregni.
Seregni led in the water with a 9:19 split over the 750m swim. Angelica Prestia was next out, 17 seconds behind. On the bike, Prestia and Luisa Iogna-Prat were able to catch Seregni to create a three woman lead group. Over the course of the four laps of 4.8km, they were able to stretch their lead a little further and by the time they arrived into T2 it was clear they would share the medals amongst themselves.
The 5km run was two laps of an out-and-back along the beach front and Seregni cruised to a 17:07 split to win by 42 seconds. After ceding a few seconds to Iogna-Prat in T2, Prestia managed to nab the silver medal. Iogna-Prat took bronze, 8 seconds behind.
The men’s race started at a hectic pace as Edoardo Petroni, Michele Sarzilla and Gaspar Riveros led the way. Petroni was first out of the water in 8:49 with Sarzilla and Riveros only 1 second back.
On the bike they were joined by Marco Lorenzon and Marco Arnaudo. However they enjoyed only a slender lead over the chase group led by Federico Spinazze’.
Sarzilla and Riveros whipped through T2 and stole a few seconds ahead of Petroni on the run. After logging a 10km personal best recently, Sarzilla’s running was in good form. Riveros, though, was in no mood to play games.
Although Sarzilla logged a 15:12 for the 5km, Riveros ripped a 14:52 to take the win. Petroni came homd in 3rd place, 1 minute 6 seconds behind Sarzilla.
While Seregni and Sarzilla will be headed to Japan next for WTCS Yokohama, Riveros will be flying in the opposite direction to take on the Americas Cup and South American Championships in Lima, Peru, next weekend.
