In 2023, the way in which prize money will be paid out in the World Triathlon Championship Series will change. Moreover, the total amount to be paid to athletes will be rising this year.
It was recently announced that World Triathlon’s Board has approved the distribution of prize money for this season.
In 2022, WTCS events paid down to the top-20 athletes in the field. Moreover, at the WTCS Final in Abu Dhabi, the top-25 finishers received prize money. Previously, the most extensive source of prize money was the Bonus Pool for the final WTCS rankings. In 2022, this paid down to the top-50 athletes overall.
In 2023, more money will be allocated to the WTCS events and the WTCS Final. At the same time, less will be made available to the Bonus Pool for the final rankings.
At each WTCS event, USD 200,000 will be distributed among the top-30 athletes. As a result, twenty more athletes per event (ten men and ten women) will be paid at each race compared with last season.
For reference, at each WTCS event in 2022, the winner received USD 18,000 while 20th place received USD 1000. How the money will be exactly divided in 2023 remains to be seen.
In addition, at the WTCS Final, prize money will go down to 40th place, an extension of 15 places.
However, going forward the Bonus Pool will only pay up to the 35th athlete.
This year, there will be a total prize money pot of USD 3,480,000 in the WTCS. This compares favourably to the USD 2,960,000 on offer in 2022. Indeed, it represents an increase of 17.5%.
In all cases, the prize money will be distributed equally across male and female races.
The news of the increased prize money will no doubt be a welcome boost to the athletes ahead of the first race of the season.
