Austrian Junior triathlete Tabea Huys narrowly missed out on a medal in the time trial at the European Cycling Championships.
Racing in the Junior women’s event in Drenthe, Huys completed the 19.8km course in 27:04.14, earning 4th place. She finished less than 8 seconds away from the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, the race was won by Federica Venturello of Italy in a time of 26:23.87.
As a cyclist, Huys has shown plenty of promise. In August she raced at the World Cycling Championships in Glasgow and finished 20th in the Junior women’s road race. In addition, she finished 11th in the Junior women’s individual time trial.
On the triathlon scene, her cycling prowess has been on display at mutliple races this season. In July, she was part of a breakaway that lit up the women’s race at the World Junior Championships. In Hamburg, Huys got through a mountain of work and very nearly held off the main pack single-handedly.
Then, in September, she put on a clinic at the European Junior Cup in Bled. She ended up with the silver medal that day after her bold breakaway attempt was ultimately thwarted by European Youth medallist Lea Houart.
There are not a lot of young triathletes with the power on the bike to match Huys. After her performance in Drenthe, it would appear there are quite a lot of elite cyclists that struggle to match her levels too.
Next up she will tackle the Junior women’s road race at the European Championships. Having been so close to a medal in the time trial, she might have something special in store.
