The World Triathlon Executive Board has confirmed the first batch of races due to take place in the 2024 season.
As was the case in 2023, Abu Dhabi will play host to the opening race of the WTCS season. The athletes will return to the Middle East in March for another early start to the season. Two months later, the Series will return with its classic stop in Yokohama. At the end of May, the third race will take place in Cagliari.
Hamburg will then occupy its standard July slot. WTCS Montreal, though, has been moved to September. In 2023 it took place in June. The season will then conclude with the WTCS Final in October. Earlier in the year, Malaga was announced as the host of the Final.
As things stand, Malaga will be one of three Olympic distance races; the other two are Yokohama and Cagliari. Having hosted the World Super Sprint Championships in 2023, Hamburg will revert to the Sprint format. Abu Dhabi and Montreal will likewise be Sprint events.
The preliminary WTCS calendar can be viewed below:
- 2-3 March – WTCS Abu Dhabi, UAE
- 11 May – WTCS Yokohama, JPN
- 25-26 May – WTCS Cagliari, ITA
- 13-14 July – WTCS Hamburg, GER
- 14-15 September – WTCS Montreal, CAN
- 17-20 October – World Triathlon Championship Finals Malaga, ESP
It should also be highlighted that Cagliari will mark the end of the Olympic qualification window. The Paris Olympic Games will then take place in the summer, with the triathlon events being held between 30 July and 5 August.
Mixed Team Relay events will also take place in Abu Dhabi, Hamburg and Montreal. On the note of the Mixed Team Relay, the Olympic Qualification Event for the relay will be held in Huatulco, Mexico.
Huatulco has been a regular venue on the World Cup circuit and the Qualification Event will be held on 19 May.
A bumper World Cup schedule has also been issued.
Once again, New Plymouth will host the first event of the year. It will come one week after WTCS Abu Dhabi. Later in March, Lievin will host the first indoor World Cup event. The venue will be purpose-built and comprises an indoor pool built inside a running track.
Lievin will represent the first time the city has featured on the circuit and the first time an indoor event has been included at the level.
Next up, Samarkand, Uzbekistan, will make its debut as a World Cup. However, the event runs concomitantly with the Huatulco World Cup, which will double up with the Mixed Team Relay Qualification Event. As will be seen in October with the clashing Chengdu and Brasilia events, scheduling World Cups on the same weekend can lead to diluted fields.
In addition to Huatulco, storied courses like Karlovy Vary will return. Tangier will also return after making its debut on the circuit in 2023.
The full schedule (with the race distances) can be seen below:
- 9-10 March – New Plymouth (NZL) – Sprint
