Will Russia Return to Elite Triathlon in 2023?

Today marks one year since Russia invaded Ukraine and plunged Europe into one of the bloodiest conflicts since 1945. At this time, there is little indication that the war will end soon as talk of peace has not advanced beyond the most basic of stages. Thousands have died. Millions have fled from their homes to safety in other European countries. To talk of sport in such a world seems small. Nevertheless, there is a conversation to be had. That conversation revolves around the presence of Russian athletes going forward. In…

The Money That Connects the Arena Games and Zwift

Tomorrow the Arena Games return for 2023. For those unfamiliar with the concept, the Arena Games began in 2020 during the pandemic-induced lockdowns as an alternative method of holding elite triathlons. The athletes race a series of short triathlons, with the disciplines taking place in the pool, on a Zwift-connected bike and on a self-powered treadmill. This made events contained and feasible under the contemporary public health guidance. Since 2020, the Arena Games has continued. Furthermore senior members of the Super League Triathlon team have indicated that they would like…

How to Qualify for the 2024 Portuguese Olympic Tri Team

Portugal has one of the most interesting selection policies for the 2024 Olympic Games. The stated aim is to prioritise the Mixed Team Relay. Portugal did not qualify a relay in Tokyo so the goal is to send a team for the first time. As a result, the relay criteria come before the individual in the selection policy. The Portuguese Federation also hopes to earn a third male slot. The policy notes that a third male slot is an ambitious goal, but also that it is within reach. How will…

The Contentious History of Australian Selection Policies

Yesterday we looked into the Australian selection policy for the 2024 Olympic Games. Upon first glance, there is nothing too outlandish contained within. As with several other countries, emphasis has been placed on the Paris Test Event this August. A top-8 finish at the WTCS Final in Pontevedra could also earn an athlete automatic qualification; again, this is not dissimilar to other countries like Germany. Australia, however, has a delicate history when it comes to selection policies. At a number of major championships over the past two decades, there have…

How to Qualify for the 2024 Australian Olympic Tri Team

To be automatically selected, an athlete must finish in the top-8 at the Paris Olympic Test Event this August. In the event that more than two…

Brownlee and Duffy Voted as Current Short Distance GOATs

Last week we posed the question asking what it will take for an athlete to be considered the GOAT in triathlon. There is not necessarily one metric that everyone will agree on for determining the GOAT. At this point in time, though, it appears that there are two definitive choices for the male and female GOATs. Women’s vote Neither Michellie Jones nor Emma Carney received more than 1% of the vote. Duffy’s choice makes sense given she has the most world titles of any woman and has an Olympic gold…
