World Triathlon have announced that applications for the 2023 World Triathlon Team are now open.
The ASICS World Triathlon Team was created to provide a developmental pathway for athletes outside the traditional routes into elite triathlon. A more detailed background into the Team is available here.
Two current Team members, Jawad Abdelmoula (MAR) and Diego Moya (CHI), are currently in line to qualify for the Paris Olympics Games through the individual Olympic qualification rankings.
Indeed, Abdelmoula and Moya are two of the current success stories of the programme. Historic successes also include Flora Duffy and Lisa Norden.
In 2023, there will be four World Cup events designated for the Team to attend. These events include Huatulco (Mexico) in June, Valencia (Spain) in September, Chengdu (China) in October and Brasilia (Brazil) in October. An additional final World Cup is due to be announced in the coming weeks.
At each of the World Cup events coaching, physiotherapy and bike mechanic support will be available for the Team members racing. Moreover only ten athletes from the Team may race at any given event. Preference is thus generally given to athletes that would be racing on their home continent.
With regards to the 2023 applications, World Triathlon noted they may invite potential female athletes fighting for the “New Flag” position of their respective continent as part of qualification for the Paris Olympics. This is in order to maximise female participation and support.
In order to apply, athletes must have been born in 1994 or later and must be in the top-250 of the World Triathlon Rankings. In addition, they are required to have at least two results finishing in the first 66% from Continental Cup events in the past 12 months.
