We recently reported that Jolien Vermeylen dropped a 9:13 800m freestyle (long course). Similarly, Lotte Miller also swam a 1500m over the weekend. To add a bit of context, we wanted to investigate where these times fit into the broader constellation of the women’s WTCS. As Vermeylen was an elite swimmer for many years prior to her switch to triathlon, it would be fair to expect her to be towards the top of the rankings. How fast, then, do the best swimmers in the women’s WTCS field swim? To make…

Ren Sato Wins CalfMan Duathlon in Japan
At the weekend, WTCS athlete Ren Sato took on the CalfMan duathlon in his native Japan. The race consisted of a 5km run, 28.8km bike and another 5km run. Sato pieced together a solid performance to secure the win in relative comfort. Opening his race with a 5km time of 15:52, his subsequent splits were a 43:25 on the bike and then a 16:31 on the second run. On paper, the splits were decent early season showings. Sato is the reigning Asian champion from 2022 and has generally enjoyed slightly…
Read MoreBrownlee and Duffy Voted as Current Short Distance GOATs
Last week we posed the question asking what it will take for an athlete to be considered the GOAT in triathlon. There is not necessarily one metric that everyone will agree on for determining the GOAT. At this point in time, though, it appears that there are two definitive choices for the male and female GOATs. Women’s vote Neither Michellie Jones nor Emma Carney received more than 1% of the vote. Duffy’s choice makes sense given she has the most world titles of any woman and has an Olympic gold…

Jolien Vermeylen was not the only triathlete racing in the pool at the weekend. Lotte Miller of Norway also hopped in to take on some short course racing. Racing at the SSK Open in Stavanger, Norway, Miller took on the 1500m (25m). She put together an 18:18.75, swimming a well-constructed race. At the 400m mark, she hit 4:49.35 and at the 800m her time was 9:43.89. That second 400 was a 4:53.54 and showed Miller’s consistent pacing throughout. Indeed, the only time she swam over 1:13 per 100m pace was…

The first Continental Cup race of 2023 took place in La Guaira, Venezuela yesterday. With temperatures nearing 30 degrees (Celsius), the athletes took on the Olympic distance for the first time this season. Men’s race Amid incredibly choppy conditions, the men took to the water from a beach start. Such was the size of some of the waves, those on the support boats did well not to get seasick. Irving Perez of Mexico and Ramon Armando Matute of Ecuador broke clear and were the first out of water. Together, they…

Last weekend, Hungarian athlete Gergely Kiss ran a new personal best time in the 3000m. Racing indoors in Budapest, Kiss recorded a time of 8:23.85. That knocked over 25 seconds off his previous best time which he set back in 2018. Running in the same field as Kiss was Csongor Lehmann, the 2021 world U23 champion. Lehmann ran a time of 8:23.42 which also represented a personal best. Although, his previous personal best was only half a second slower and was set back in 2020 (also indoors). It appears, then,…

Belgian athlete Jolien Vermeylen yesterday swam a 9:13.88 800m freestyle at the Flemish Swimming Championships in Antwerp. Held over long course (50m), Vermeylen swam an evenly split race, taking out the first half in a 4:34.51 and bringing home the second half in a 4:39.37. Her performance was enough to take the win by over 1.5 seconds. For good measure, she also added a speedy 1:14 breaststroke split in her team’s 4×100 medley relay. It is worth noting that Vermeylen dropped that split about 15 minutes after her 800m. Vermeylen’s…
Read MoreFlora Duffy and the Twisting Road to the Top
The path to the top is littered with cliff edges. It is so easy for athletes to fall by the wayside. Young promise not quite realised, young dreams slowly let go. How does one become a world champion, let alone a four-time world champion? When we look at the career of Flora Duffy, it is as instructive as it is inspirational. The path that led her to an Olympic gold medal and two Commonwealth Games titles was by no means straightforward. There was nothing easy or obvious about it. At…

Read MoreMore Changes to the 2023 World Triathlon Calendar
World Triathlon made public a number of changes to the 2023 calendar overnight. They come after the changes made in January that saw the addition of WTCS Cagliari and WTCS Montreal and the removal of the Bergen and Busselton World Cup events. The first change to affect the season is that the Yeongdo World Cup, scheduled for 6/7 May, has been pushed into the second half of the year. At this point, the exact new timing of the Yeongdo World Cup is unknown. It appears that the rationale for the…

Earlier today, we considered some of the points that will determine the Greatest Of All Time in triathlon. It is hard to say for sure what the most important factors are and it might be impossible for everyone to agree on one set of criteria. The solution, then, is to put it to the people. At this point in time, who do you consider to be the men’s and women’s GOATs? Below you will find two polls, one for the men and one for the women. We have tried to…
Read MoreWhat will it take to become the GOAT in triathlon?
Earlier this week, we posted about the athletes with the most WTCS medals on Instagram. It was also pointed out that Javier Gomez won 11 World Cups races prior to the launch of the Series, including during a dominant 2008. It made us wonder: how would one go about measuring claims of a triathlete being the Greatest Of All Time? Triathlon is fragmented into different eras as a result of the creation of the WTCS. How, for instance, does one measure a world title won over the course of a…

Miriam Casillas was 18 years old when she arrived in Madrid. Born and raised in Badajoz in the south-west, she arrived in the capital to fulfil a childhood aspiration of becoming a doctor. In doing so, she would follow the footsteps of her mother and, at that time, the road ahead seemed set. Casillas, though, just so happened to also be a talented triathlete. In 2011, she won the World Junior Cross Triathlon Championships held in her home region. When she arrived in Madrid, then, she was also invited to…
